Behind Every Successful Teacher...

Literature Matters is a national teacher training initiative to boost reading in schools. The project will provide training and enthuse trainee teachers about children’s literature, and will be delivered by professional librarians from School Library Services, in conjunction with ITT providers of all kinds, linking to literature events and local projects. This two-year project (Sept 2004-Sept 2006) is jointly funded by the DfES, the Arts Council and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.

The overall aims of ‘Literature Matters’ are:

  • to increase knowledge of children’s books and libraries in initial teacher training (with particular reference to diversity)
  • to increase confidence in promoting children’s books and using libraries in initial teacher training
  • to enhance links between ITT providers and libraries and the literature sector

As part of its contribution to this initiative, MLA North West brings colleges and library services together regularly, holds training courses, and has produced the Behind Every Successful Teacher training materials. The text of these training materials is reproduced below, together with extra details, and links to important organisations
